Thing-a-Week 2011

December 30, 2010

Because my creative efforts these past few months have been decidedly lacking, and because peer-reviewed motivational projects have worked well enough for me in the past, I’m excited to announce a new personal challenge for the new year: Thing-a-Week 2011.

In the style of Jonathan Coulton’s similarly named project (not to mention countless others who’ve done similar things), the purpose of Thing-a-Week is to keep me dedicated to creativity over the course of an entire year. Every Saturday from January 1 until December 31, 2011, I’ll be posting a new creative project. This could be an illustration, a poster design, a prop or sculpture, a doodle, or merely a work in progress. It’s flexible enough to allow some fluidity in the weeks that I’m simply too busy (or not motivated enough) to dedicate to a polished, complete project, yet enough to keep me still creating any kind of art on a regular basis.

Because projects like these are always much more fun when undertaken with pals, fellow Gateway alum Caitlin Crawshaw will also be undertaking the challenge, and posting her own works over at her blog.

I’m excited and terrified by the prospect of what I’m getting into here. At worst, I crash and burn, and post a half-assed update. At best, I get to show my art in a public forum, building some valuable portfolio pieces, and maybe even getting some legit recognition. As per usual, comments and critiques are very welcome, as are suggestions — I’m sure to have some weeks where the idea mill will screech to a halt.

So, starting January 1, keep your eyes on this here blog for Thing-a-Week 2011, and be sure to spread the word about my and Caitlin’s crazy endeavours!
