Thing-a-Week 40: Aystra Laicean

I spent the greater part of the past week working on another character portrait from my D&D campaign: Aystra Laicean, Cleric of Ehlonna.
I’m very pleased with how the inks came together on this. It’s some of the stronger line work I’ve managed, and I’m glad to be making some noticeable progress in this kind of thing. On top of that, pencils and inks only took a little over a day’s work to complete, which is a heck of a lot faster than my usual pace.
So where does the “greater part of a week” come in? The subsequent days have been spent fidgeting with colours, and it’s especially evident that colour theory is still an area that I need to brush up on — so much so that I’m reluctant to post what I still feel is an incomplete colouring job. But I’d rather treat this as a learning exercise than fret over not making it perfect on the first go, and it won’t help to hide all of my failed attempts from the public eye.
Caitlin’s entry this week is still percolating, but she made a great post on failure this week that I can definitely relate to. In the creative process, it’s necessary to fail often in order to get better at what you’re doing, even if those missteps tend to sting.
