Thing-a-Week 49: Dapper Dinos

I’ve started going to the Art Gallery of Alberta’s weekly drop-in art workshops. Over a two-hour course, they introduce you to a certain medium, demonstrate some techniques, and then set you loose to explore and create your own brand of art with them. It’s a great opportunity to work with new materials and share your work with fellow artists.
This week, we created some mixed media Artist Trading Cards. What better chance to use my trademark dinosaurs? These are done with a combination of india ink, watercolour pencil, and patterned collage paper for the bow ties.

Thing-a-Week 48: Insert Deer pun here

I spent the weekend on a much-needed getaway in the mountains. Amongst the premature holiday cheer, this afforded me some extra time to do some more life drawing. This handsome fellow is the result:

Thing-a-Week 47: Occupy something or other

If you try hard enough, I’m sure you can pull out some kind of metaphor for the Occupy movement from this. Don’t read into it too deeply. Today, I just felt like drawing the saddest thing.

Thing-a-Week 46: Austerity-Bot

Have you been to The Charrette? It’s a blog run by Mike Otto and Scott Lilwall, a couple of Edmontonians and very good friends of mine, all about our city’s municipal design and planning. A niche market, for sure, but if you’re the type who spends hours toiling away at your virtual ledgers in Sim City and have an opinion on Edmonton’s arena project, public transit, neighbourhood revitalization, or any number of civic topics, The Charrette is Edmonton’s number one source.
Last week, Mike made a post about the city’s proposed cuts for the upcoming annual budget, and asked me to illustrate it. The concept was that the city has employed an angry, heartless robot to boil down all of Edmonton’s luxuries in favour of total austerity. Thus was born Austerity-Bot. You can see him here, but to get the full effect, go read the post itself and see what sorts of crazy jargon he’s spewing today!
As an added bonus, here’s a whole pile of doodles I’ve been working on over the past week.

Thing-a-Week 45: SQUIRREL DRUGS

If I’m being honest, I’ve been in another art slump in the post-Halloween fallout. Who knew that expending a month’s worth of creative energy on prop-making, while de-prioritizing drawing would make it tough to get back into drawing?
But this isn’t another excuse-filled Thing-a-Week post. Have some squirrel drugs!
Caitlin’s been doing more digital work this week, and is making a serious effort to catch up on the posts she missed while galavanting in Europe. Go check ‘em out!

For what it’s worth, even though I kept forgetting to actually post this week’s Thing, the projects themselves were done by the weekend.
You might have noticed that the volume of art I’ve been posting lately has taken a drastic drop. I anticipated this, however, at the outset of the project, considering that every October, my creative outlets become completely consumed by Halloween prop-making. It’s a different medium, but it keeps me creating nonstop nonetheless. This year’s party, a Retro-B-movie/Mad-Science theme, presented plenty of opportunity for campy props and decor…
Now that Halloween’s over, here’s hoping that I’ll get back to my regularly scheduled doodling by next week.

Giant Ant looking for a good home
Now that Halloween is officially wrapped up for another year, I’ve found I’m lacking storage space to keep all of my machinations — so I’m selling my giant ant.
He measures approximately 7′ long from head to tail, and is made of papier mache with a chicken-wire frame. Because of that, he’s pretty lightweight and easy to transport. I’m hoping to get $100 for him.
As you can see, he works great in both indoor and outdoor environments. Use him as a setpiece for your next Halloween haunt, put him on a float, or use him as a progressive public art installation!

Thing-a-Week 43: Monster Mash

Back on the illustration wagon this week. The Gateway’s Halloween feature runs in this week’s issue, and I’ve been looking for an excuse to do some more vector illustration, so I whipped up some masks to run with it.
Caitlin’s been on vacation in Europe for the past few weeks, but she’s finally back. I expect she’ll have a plethora of awesome arts to share from her trip soon.
